Whereas parks, trails, and public green spaces have seen a dramatic rise in use as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic;

Whereas our community continues to grow in population and recreational amenities to support this growth;

Whereas keeping our parks, trails and public green spaces clean and safe is a priority of Council;

Whereas the rise in use and expansion of green spaces maintained by the Town has increased the amount of waste in Town parks and green spaces;

Whereas the City of Vaughan is piloting a program in city parks where sensors have been installed to measure the level of waste within each waste bin, and such information is automatically sent to a data management system, identifying the level of waste;

Whereas this automated system may implement a smarter and efficient way to collect from waste bins, reducing overall transport, collection costs and help keep our community green;

Therefore be it resolved that staff be directed to investigate the City of Vaughan's pilot program and report back to Council on the feasibility of implementing a similar program in Town parks and green spaces.

Whereas Twin City Agreements contribute to the promotion and celebration of cultural and economic ties to a community;

Whereas a number of municipalities in Ontario have successful Twin City agreements;

Whereas the community of Isola de Liri, Italy shares many common elements with the Town of Caledon including resident and cultural ties as well as agricultural and natural heritage similarities;

Whereas at a virtual meet and greet between Mayor Thompson and Mayor Quadrini in 2021, there was an expressed interest to explore the opportunity to connect the Town of Caledon and Isola del Liri through a Twin Town Agreement;

Whereas a delegation of four members from Isola del Liri, Italy are planning to come to Caledon in June 2022 to learn more about Caledon and explore opportunities for a potential future Twin Town Agreement;

Whereas the Bolton Italian Culture Centre Organization is prepared to host the delegation;

Now therefore be it resolved that $7,500 from the Town’s Economic Development Marketing and Events 2022 operating budget be provided as a grant to the Bolton Italian Culture Centre Organization to host the delegation from Isola del Liri, Italy in June 2022;

That staff be directed to explore the economic benefits of developing a Twin Town Agreement with Isola del Liri, Italy and report back.
